Learning the right moves for square dancing is very important though. If you don’t have them down pat you will stick out like a sore thumb. To start, you will be in the middle of the room with all the other dancers. Your partner will be at your side. As the music starts you will turn to your partner and move forward so that your partner can move around you. Of course you may be the one moving around them while they stand still so make sure you know your role before the dancing begins.

Depending on the type of square dancing you are doing, there are various moves including the flutter wheel, reverse flutter, pass the ocean, and the right and left through can all be parts that you will need to know. The best way to learn is to get to know one element of square dancing inside and out before you move on to the next. After you have learned all of them you can start to bring them together. Your goal should be to eventually move from one of them into the next gracefully and easily.

You can also take on the role of being the caller for a square dancer. Now, this role is also very tricky and takes practice. Remember that the dancers out there are relying upon you to tell them what moves to make and when to make them.
