It used to be that anyone who wanted to place long distance phones calls to family or friends had to sign up with a long distance phone company. This service did allow us to place long distance calls but often brought with it very high per minute costs, making long distance calls an expensive proposition. IP phones can be cordless, giving you the convenience of moving freely through your home or office as you speak.

The most unusual option is computer-to-computer VOIP. For this your provider will give you special software to install on your computer. Long distance calls are placed directly from the computer. Instead of a phone handset you use a microphone attached to the computer to speak. All of these services can be useful and convenient but none offer the total portability of cell phones. Now the concept of VOIP cell phones is causing some excitement, offering a combination of appealing features with low cost long distance and portability.

Most people turn to VOIP because of the savings available. Normal VOIP service offers a great combination of features such as Caller ID, Call Waiting, 3-way Calling, free domestic calls and extremely inexpensive international calling rates. And if your Internet connection is frequently interrupted you will also experience the dropped calls that can sometimes plague traditional cell phones. Still, for someone with reliable Internet service who frequently makes international calls from their cell phone or exceeds their traditional plan minutes, VOIP cell phone service can be a great alternative.

Obviously, for some people VOIP is, even now, a great solution. All your services can be bundled into one communications package and the technology, while still young, is improving all the time. If you are constantly going over your minutes and/or make international calls from your cell phone it would make sense for you to consider a reasonably priced VOIP plan. If you don’t need more minutes and don’t make international calls then it probably makes more sense to wait while the technology improves and the service becomes even better.

Mobile phones are a necessary evil in today’s world. Nobody anywhere can even imagine moving around without a mobile phone. The telecom companies have made real good use of the people’s dependency on this tiny little gadget. They have also provided great many services and this has improved the service quality and customer satisfaction.  However the concept of caller tunes or hello tunes or whatever that has been introduced by the companies is more a pain to the ear than comfort. Anybody can have anything as their caller tune. It really gets irritating at times.

I once called up a guy and a girl answered the phone, I didn’t expect it and so politely asked for my friend, then there was an abrupt cut and my friend answered the phone. Out of sheer curiosity I asked him who that girl was and he laughed and said that it was his caller tune.

Caller tunes are expensive no doubt, and people have to pay per song if they wish to change it frequently, and there are over half a dozen offers related only to caller tunes. In spite of earning enough, the telecom operators still try to make the best of their situation. They launched the share the caller tune offer where customers could buy caller tunes for their friends as a gift, if this was not enough there is another offer saying that you can split up the subscription for the caller tune and that it would be deducted from the balance in installments. One fine day I topped up for ten rupees and the next day my balance went down in negative, thanks to caller tunes.

The latest marketing or profit earning gimmick that these telecom companies have introduces is putting their ad right in front of the caller tune. Some female tells us to tap a few numbers and sacrifice our balance for someone else to enjoy.

This is a selfish world and I still cannot understand what people find so comforting in making others listen to songs while we ourselves do not get to hear it. This doubt has boggled me for quite a while.

Some time back I had to talk to a friend in a village, and it was a bit urgent, I gave him a call and he told me that he would call me back. I waited for an hour and a half and finally with my patience running out, I decided to call him up and confront him asking what his problem was. Being not educated he told me that after he called my number a woman had told him to press the * and 9 on his cell phone, and he did that. As a result, his subscription was promptly deducted from his balance and he had no money left to call me. Wish the telecom operators were so prompt in handling complaints. Another nuisance of this caller tune fever is that I have begun to miss the good old trrring trrring of the phones. That was real music to the ears and gave a feel that you were going to talk or communicate with someone. Now it feels like the intermission in a movie theater.

The worst part is the constant calls (automated voice calls) from these telecom operators giving us a list of songs and asking which one they would like us to sign up for. Another death trap as the pressing of the wrong button could leave you poorer by 40 or 50 rupees. I wonder when the telecom companies are going to become mature enough to stop fooling around with mobile subscribers and leave them at peace to enjoy a normal phone call.

Mobile phones actually already charge a lot of money. Reports say that on average a SMS costs only 0.01paise and not even 0.01rupee. So technically, the telecom operators charge us nearly hundred times the actual cost incurred, and in spite of it they still ask for more money. I say they should provide consumers all these added features free of cost and not have any more hidden charges. But that is something that may never happen.  

When every telecom operator is not interested in providing customers real value for money, what is there to be done? Think about it…

Well, firstly, my friend has Caller ID and we are mad at each other right now, so she won’t pick up the phone if she sees it is from me. I know there is a way, but doesn’t it cost money? I live in California… and I just want to do it for a single call.
OH- and do you have to HAVE Caller ID for this to work?
