Lately I’ve been getting annoying phone calls from telemarketers trying to sell me things. Last I’ve heard, it’s illegal for them to call mobile phones trying to sell their crap. I tried to ask for the manager or the name of their company, (telemarketers) but they just quickly hang up when I ask for a supervisor. They would not even let me ask them to take my number out of their calling list.

I do have caller-id, so their number shows up on my screen, however, when I try to call that number, it goes straight to voice mail and the VM gives no info that is useful to the authorities.

Question. How can I program my phone to not allow a call through if the caller is coming from the number I’ve blocked. Is there a way, a easy way?
I’ve found the answer: Took a little searching but here it is. This should stop them bastards. =D

Who else is sick and tired of anonymous calls coming in to your home or cell phone? In these days of hard economic times…..are you behind on your bills and simply AFRAID to even answer your phone due to all of the unlisted, private or “blocked” digits that show up on your caller ID? If you are anything like I used to be, the NOT knowing whether a call is coming from a legitimate source, an old friend or even someone I’d really LIKE to hear from would drive me nuts!

Honestly? When I first heard of a few of these services, I had NO idea what they could (or could NOT) do. But after getting barraged by a veritable cacophony of calls from a mess of numbers I did NOT recognize (but assumed were all roughly the same person or persons due to the area code) I finally let my curiosity get the best of me and ran the digits through one of these services. Not only was the number recognized immediately…..but a whole host of other important information was shared with ME, about THEM, that was extremely enlightening to say the least..:-)

Want to know who it was?

In this case it was simply a company on the West Coast (I live on the East) who was trying to collect a very old debt they had bought from a credit card I owned when I was 24. And for such a small amount of money…and a debt that wasn’t even theirs, they were NOT shy about calling me 18 times a day, I can promise you that..:-)

The Bottom Line?

I got their physical address RIGHT from the phone detective service, and sent them a certified letter instructing them to NEVER bother me again by phone….and to sue me if they wanted their money. (it was a few hundred dollars and over 10 years old, and I knew this was a threat that would work!) I never heard from them again…and I was finally able to STOP worrying about trying to figure out who was calling me at 8am in the morning…..and AGAIN and again all day long!

I have the same telemarketing # show up on my caller ID and I have asked them for months to take me off their calling list and they keep calling me? Who do I contact, FCC, FTC, ???

With the advent of wireless communications, many of us can now enjoy more freedom than ever before. Talk whenever we want, wherever we want, to whomever we want. Always available communication has many advantages. However the anonymous, mobile nature of this new technology has also brought with it some drawbacks.

Cell Phone Privacy is a Double Edged Sword

At first, it was standard industry practice. Companies did not voluntarily give out cell phone information as no one wanted to pay for annoying interruptions from telemarketers with their expensive cellular minutes. Later as computers advanced and made it easier to place automated calls to phones at any time of the day, the governments became involved. All manner of privacy regulations were passed for every type of phone and communication device.

This seems like only a beneficial occurrence at first glance. However, a deeper look reveals something more sinister. Harassers, pranksters, and unscrupulous telemarketers (not to mention government authorities) of all kinds always have ways of finding our personal information. They place calls using their automated voice machines at all times of the day. Whenever you answer, its logged for future reference. Then they begin calling regularly at the most annoying times. When we’re working. When we’re conversing with friends or associates. When we’re entertaining. Etc.

We can’t stop it. At least, not until now. Without their information, we have no way to stop them. Half the time, we can’t even call them back – and when we can, we either get mocked by someone making a funny voice or end up listening to a recording.

Now, however, there are special reverse phone directories available which finally let us search special databases to find out about cellular and private numbers. These websites will give us the name, address, background info, carrier, service status, and much more about a person’s phone number. Even if the number is marked ‘private’. 98% of all numbers are available as public records, and these websites make them accessible in seconds from one place. Unlike the free searches, we can find more than the outdated carrier or ‘phone type’ information.

These websites do charge a small fee to cover the operating expenses of maintaining accurate information. However, they allow unlimited access for as many number searches as you might have, and offer a refund if it turns out information is not available. In my experience, this is a far better option than spending hours searching the Internet only to be met with frustration.

I joined the do-not-call list and I used to be able to report on the donotcall.gov website. But now the ugly marketing companies can hide their caller ID’s. When I pick up the phone it’s a recorded marketing message. I know there are certain machines that can detect non-human calls, but would the machines screen out those automatic calls from doctor office or library as well?

What are your thoughts on the subject?
